This umbrella is part of a pair that was given as a gift of gratitude to a doctor and his wife from a grateful patient. It is interesting that the umbrellas would be seen as appropriate items for such a gift; they are very expensive, high quality pieces because of the ornate silver handles, and are said to have come from Tiffany. It is unusual to have a pair of umbrellas belonging to a husband and wife, where one can compare what was appropriate at the time in umbrella styles for a man and a woman.
