Umbrella
National|George W. Welsh's Son|Gorham Manufacturing Company
1905–20 · silk, wood, metal · Costume Institute

This umbrella is a well crafted and obviously expensive object. The workmanship for parasols and umbrellas of this quality was divided among various skilled craftsmen and manufacturers, as evidenced by the three makers' marks on this example. The provenance of this item is also noteworthy, as it was owned by a member of the Roosevelt family. Lest the umbrella be mislaid, the handle is engraved with the name and address of the owner.
