Parasol
Betaille
1912 · silk, metal, wood, porcelain, synthetic · Costume Institute

This is an interesting and elegant parasol, purchased on the rue Royale, the main shopping thoroughfare in Paris particularly attractive to tourists. The handle imitates the Chinese cloisonné technique with distinctly Chinese imagery, and fits accordingly with the craze for Orientalism during that period.
