Alfred Renoleau began his career as a hairdresser in the town of Mansle before developing a passion for the ceramics of Bernard Palissy (1510-1590), which he probably saw exhibited in nearby Bordeaux. Training in ceramics during his spare time, a distracted Renoleau allegedly left a customer’s head half-shaved in order to tend to a kiln (and failed to return). While inspired by the natural motifs of the Renaissance potter, Renoleau arranges the crayfish on this dish in an asymmetrical composition reminiscent of Japanese design.
