Girault’s innovative double image depicts the two stone minarets of the Mosque of Sultan al-Hakim, which was begun in 990 and completed in the early eleventh century. The earliest surviving minarets in Cairo, they are different from one another in shape and decoration, but both have tops that were replaced in the early fourteenth century after an earthquake.
