The Damascus Gate, built in the 1530s by the Ottoman sultan Süleyman the Great, is one of the principal entrances to the old city of Jerusalem. Girault’s close-up view focuses on the crenellated lookout chamber above the gate, which was badly damaged in 1967 during the Six-Day War. It was rebuilt and restored, complete with its arrow slit, in 2011.
