Identified by Girault only as the Grand Minaret, this building no longer survives in Alexandria. Photographs of a British bombardment of the city in 1882 show it in what would have been the modern quarter. Therefore, it was an early nineteenth-century minaret built in a tradi­tional Mamluk style, evidence that medieval revivalism, which had in part instigated Girault's journey, was not con­fined to the West.
