This lobed ornament is often referred to as "foulet khamsa" and was worn by Moroccan Amazigh (Berber) women either as a pendant or a waist ornament. The overall shape resembles an abstracted form of the "khamsa" or hand motif which is worn to protect from the evil eye. This example has been decorated with pierced openwork, made up of scrolling arabesques.
