Buckles, such as this example, were worn at the waist by Amazigh (Berber) women in Morocco to fasten a belt made from embroidered fabric. Ornaments of this shape are sometimes referred to as fekroun, or turtle, as their shape resembles the shell. This jewel was one of many commonly gifted by a groom to his bride.
