Although Picasso never fully subscribed to the tenets of Surrealism, he was embraced by the writers and artists of the movement as one of their own. Picasso benefited from his association with the group, especially the writers, who led him to explore new, expressionistic imagery - manifested in distorted and sometimes monstrous forms - culled from the subconscious.
