The one hundred etchings known together as the Vollard Suite, made between 1930 and 1937, are Picasso’s most celebrated prints. Many of them concern the relationship between artist and work or between artist and model. The figure of the Dutch master Rembrandt appears in four etchings from the series. Here, the seventeenth-century artist is characterized as in his late self-portraits, with bulbous nose, large cheeks, wild hair, and plumed cap. He appears between a sculpture on a plinth and an outline of a woman’s face in profile, both Picasso’s own inventions. Through this arrangement Picasso positions himself as heir to the revered painter and printmaker.
