Like the pinecones-and-needles fabrics (28.70.6), this quince-patterned fabric utilizes a pale palette of creams and golds that shimmer as light shines on the folds of the cloth, and is woven of fine silk yarns. In this case, the weave is a complex damask. The quince panel was a gift from a member of the Cheney family, by whom it had been regarded, perhaps inaccurately, as the work of Associated Artists. The pattern is more refined and more realistically drawn and shaded than most of the firm’s designs. The fragile silk fabric has sustained damage caused by light, age, and possibly the method of silk processing at the mill
