Sargent sketched this informal portrait of his friend, the celebrated American sculptor Paul Manship (1885–1966), as they chatted during a visit to Manship’s New York studio. Manship’s daughter Pauline, who was then seven years old, watched Sargent create this drawing and was astonished by his rapid facility, remarking, "Mr. Sargent is drawing Papa just like writing!"
