Theodore Robinson — Kenyon Cox

Cox and Theodore Robinson (1852-1896) met in Paris in late 1877 when Cox joined studio classes with Carolus-Duran, a popular society portraitist and teacher. The faint inscription of "Venice" indicates that Cox completed this portrait sketch of Robinson during their two-month stay in Italy in September-October 1878, a period that Cox later identified in letters as among the most formative times in his artistic development.
