In the early sixteenth century, the Italian artist Niculoso Pisano introduced in Seville the flat, pictorial style that enabled tile makers employing enamel colors to produce more painterly images, such as the decoration on this wall tile. Strapwork cartouches in the Flemish manner surround the head, which probably represents a Roman emperor.
