A gunshot fired from Mont Valerin on Monday morning, November 11, 1918, signaled to Paris that the Germans and the Allies had signed the armistice agreement ending World War I. Boggs, an expatriate painter whose works had become popular in France, captured the spontaneous demonstration of public enthusiasm and excitement that occurred that day at the Place de la Concorde.
