Loiseau followed Gauguin to Pont Aven in 1890 and was attached to various of the Post-Impressionists. However he soon developed his own style, characterized by interlocking, quick brush-strokes that create an intricate, lattice-like surface. He became famous as a great voyager and painted numerous, diverse landscapes. In spite of these travels, his native Paris remained a constant subject for him. Here the Place de la Bastille is shown on a summer day with the glittering surfaces of the bronze column, the pavement, and the brilliant blue sky.
