1953 · cotton · Costume Institute

To compliment her casual and comfortable garments, designer Claire McCardell collaborated with Capezio to adapt their soft ballet slippers to streetwear. McCardell went on to design a series of shoes with Capezio. This pair of flats is recorded as having been inspired by a pair of shoes dating from 1800-1810 in the Brooklyn Museum's Design Lab, of which McCardell was a member. While it is not certain if McCardell herself designed these shoes, the style is very much in line with her work for the company.
