Shawl
Unknown
third quarter 19th century · linen, silk · Costume Institute

The high quality of this Brussels needle lace shawl is displayed not only in the fine workmanship but also in the complexity of its design. The variety of motifs includes a number of different types of flowers. The border motif, which features alternating lilacs, roses, and aster-like flowers, is particularly intricate. A velvet-covered plastic headband, which has since been removed, was attached to the apex of the triangular shawl to modify it for use as a veil.
