The square frame of this hat is an unusually creative interpretation of the early cloche, which had a high crown; flat top and wide brim, a style that remained popular in the early 1920s for spring and summer wear. The various manipulations of the tulle: densely wrapped around the crown, stretched over the brim and shirred around the edge, all complimented by the moiré ribbon band, attest to the high caliber of design and craftsmanship of Brooklyn-based milliner Elizabeth Rhind.
