Mourning hat
Hermance
ca. 1915 · silk, feather · Costume Institute

A combination of interesting textures and attractive lines makes this well-preserved hat a highlight of the collection. The crushed hatters plush gives the appearance of broadtail fur, and the tailored bow in front is created from strips of silk, which adds another texture to hat. The low, elongated shape and thoughtful application of feathers creates an aerodynamic feel, which was an important trend of the period.
