The post-World War I era was a transitional period in fashion, one in which the highly feminized image of the 1910s was making way for the carefree garçonne of the later 1920s. That stylistic transition is expressed in this hat in its bold patterning, contrasting colors and unusual combination of materials. The handsome foliate pattern and wool embroidery are a nod to the heavy stylized floral millinery ornamentation of the 1910s, relieved by the delicate silk ground and straw under brim. James McCutcheon and Company was known primarily as an exclusive retailer of fine linens and women's and children's furnishings.
