Evening suit
Madame Marie Gerber|Callot Soeurs
ca. 1920 · silk, cotton · Costume Institute

Rita de Acosta Lydig (1880-1929) was a noted beauty and style icon of the early twentieth century and the owner this garment attributed to Callot Soeurs. A great admirer and collector of lace, de Acosta Lydig patronized Callot Soeurs in appreciation of Madame Gerber's similar affinity for lace and her skillful use of antique trimmings. This suit, along with a cream-colored version in the collection (2009.300.1183a, b), reveals how Rita de Acosta Lydig conceived of her wardrobe: she found garments that suited her unique personal taste and then ordered multiple versions of the same design.
