Charles Rohlfs

Charles Rohlfs, whose workshop opened in 1898, made furniture concerned with style, form, hand carving, and ornament. This oak and copper clock was designed for Rohlf's own home. Perhaps because he was not a commercially successful designer (he left behind a relatively small output), he was unrestrained in his design choices. This clock has affinities to contemporary Central European design, particularly a tall clock by German designer Richard Riemerschmid. Rohlfs exhibited furniture at the 1902 Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte Decorativa Moderna in Turin, which brought him new prestige and commissions.
