Peonies have been cultivated in East Asia since ancient times. Known in China as “the King of Flowers,” they have long been associated with power, dignity, and prosperity. This symbolism expanded after the genus was brought to Japan in the eighth century by Buddhist monks. As elegant and auspicious flowers, peonies were often incorporated into floral arrangements and displayed in bamboo baskets such as this one, with a tall handle.
