This fragment comes from a handscroll of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals known as the Tameshige version because its calligraphy was once attributed to the influential poet Nijō Tameshige (1334–1385). The simple rendering of Kiyohara no Motosuke (908–990)—one of these thirty-six esteemed figures—contrasts with the bold, assertive lettering of his poem above. The poem reads: 秋の埜のはぎのにしきをふるさとに鹿のねうつしてしかな How I wish I could bring back to the place I was born the brocade of bush clover, covering these autumn fields, as well as the baying of deer.
