Utagawa Kuniyoshi

In the 1840s and 50s Kuniyoshi was noted for portraying beauties in triptych format. His images of women gave a round, soft impression in 1840s, but an angular, harder impression in 1850s. The dominance of blue throughout the three sheets effectively highlights the touches of red in the women's clothing. Each of the three women is individually portrayed under pine trees in each sheet. On the other hand, the background of rivers and distant scenes, as well as the continuous foreground, connects the three beauties together.
