Charles Sumner and Henry Mather Greene, two brothers, were West Coast architects who developed an elegant regional version of the Arts and Crafts style. Furnishings of the Robert R. Blacker house in Pasadena, California (extant, though altered), an early commission with a lavish budget, included this living-room table and the dining-room armchair, one of two. Both pieces were conceived en suite with the woodwork and furnishings of the rooms; they exemplify the fine craftsmanship, rich materials, delicate detailing, and Asian influence that characterize the custom-made furnishings that the Peter Hall shop manufactured to Greene and Greene's designs.
