Fukuda Kodōjin, the Chinese characters of whose name mean literally “Old Daoist,” was highly regarded not only for his accomplishments in the fields of painting and calligraphy but also as a poet of Chinese verse. For this work he brushed a four-line, five-character poem as two columns of brusque, cursive calligraphy, beginning at upper right: 靄々古松色 雲霞流水閑 老鶴引雉歩 和鳴天地間 Over the colors of ancient pines, Clouds and mist flow like an idle stream. An old crane and pheasant walk on, Their calls merging heaven and the earth.
