Rössler is recognized as the most important independent decorator of German faience active in Nuremberg. He specialized in schwarzlot, a black and white decoration technique that evoked Rössler’s work as a copper engraver. Along with complex battle scenes, Rössler specialized in biblical images such as this example showing the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, which the painter has anachronistically depicted taking place near a German village.
