Mastering both Western tailoring techniques as well as Oriental approaches to the body, Galliano fuses different eras and geographic locations in this mini kimono dress. Tailored like a double-breasted men's jacket combined with batwing kimono sleeves, this short and tight fitting dress recalls at once the glamour of the 1940s as well as Paul Poiret's Orientalist visions of the 1910s, and his introduction of the kimono style in Paris in 1908. Shown at the hotel particulier of art and fashion patron São Schlumberger, this collection catapulted the British designer to the top of the Paris couture world with an appointment at Givenchy a few months later.
