Very popular throughout the eighteenth century, boxes made of precious metal continued to be fashionable after the French Revolution as is well illustrated by this enameled and gold box with its agate stone used for the cover. It is smaller than most snuffboxes and it is possible that it was used for the storage of pastilles or other delicacies.
