Circular box

ca. 1780 · Two-tone gold, rock crystal · European Sculpture and Decorative Arts

Luxurious containers for snuff or sweet meats were created of many different materials. Here flawless rock crystal is enhanced by the Neoclassical swags and pendants of the gold mount. Transparent by nature, this crystal box would have offered a glimpse at the contents stored inside, most likely dragées or pastilles made of anise seed.
