In this sheet of preliminary sketches from an artist’s portfolio, we see at upper left a twin shrine with two images of Krishna playing flute; at center is a forest bower beneath which Krishna and Radha embrace passionately. The next study, of a scene from the Ramayana epic, shows Rama restored as the king of Ayodhya. At lower right are two studies for forest scenes: one of Rama and Sita’s exile, and the other of Sita visiting a holy man (rishi) in a grove. Finally, at lower left, is a study of Maharaja Raj Singh seated with courtiers and scribes.
