Stools played an important role in the hierarchical seating arrangements of the French court. Depending on the rank of the company, one remained standing or was assigned a floor cushion or stool, rarely a chair. This pair of stools displays the fine craftsmanship that characterized furniture by the Tilliard family of menuisiers.
