This pâte-surpâte vase demonstrates the remarkable talents of Marc-Louis Emanuel Solon, a former ceramicist at Sèvres who arrived at Minton in 1870 and transformed the pâte-sur-pâte (paste on paste) technique at the British ceramics factory into an art form. Pâte-sur-pâte consists in applying thin coatings of slip, typically white but sometimes polychrome, in successive layers to a damp and unfired clay body to create delicate decorative motifs. This signed piece demonstrates the pride that Solon took in using the technique to create cameo-like effects on his vases.
