In this fall/winter 2012–13 wool and nylon blend dress, Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto seems to reference his own past: the famous red stripe is characteristic of the Y-3 sportswear collections he made in collaboration with Adidas and which were very successful during the 1990s and early 2000s. Apart from this reference, the drape of this body-skimming dress reveals the designer’s continuous exploration of methods to hide and reveal the wearer’s body. Whereas his earlier work was characterized by loose-fitting garments and a love for historical references, here he creates a more sensual, body-skimming dress with a draped hood reminiscent of a religious headdress, accentuated by a dramatic red horizontal stripe.
