Jacques Doucet
1920–23 · wool, silk, glass · Costume Institute

Suturing skirt and top with dynamic crests, Doucet borrowed the energetic emblems of Cubism as devices for fashion. Abstract pattern makes sense on the figure only as a demonstration of Cubist energy. The cape's exaggerated asymmetry affords an exciting equilibrium, as does the dialogue between the forms of the pleated skirt and the flat blouse.
