Baskets are among the oldest forms of Native art, and one that found particular favor among Euro-American collectors from the 19th century on. Basketmakers, mostly women, used plants common to their regions, dyeing some and leaving others in their natural colorations. Lucy Telles’s artistic vision and technical skill are revealed in the precisely controlled stitch count and design of her rounded, flat-shouldered basket bowl—a popular type of California basket design.
