1980s · Smoked timber bamboo, timber bamboo, and rattan · Asian Art

On the island of Kyūshū, Iwao Kōunsai (1901–1992), an influential bamboo craftsman known for his high-quality flower baskets, established a lineage that includes Kadota Nikō. Kadota moved to Beppu to learn bamboo craft and became one of Kōunsai’s disciples. This flower basket was created with the armor plaiting (yoroi-gumi) characteristic of Kyūshū bamboo craft.
