One of the most original and influential twentieth-century ceramists in Japan, Yagi was inspired by his contemporary Isamu Noguchi. His compositional influences ranged from Chinese Cizhou ware to the work of Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, and Max Ernst. On this vessel he used a slip-inlay technique (mishima) developed by twelfth-century Korean potters to fill the finely incised lines.
