Wind is a striking example of Kohyama Yasuhisa’s Shigaraki-clay work, which he coil-builds, sculpts, and carves using steel wires. The natural ash surface and edges highlight the rough clay and suggest an eroding desert rock. He fires his works for about a week at more than 2350 degrees Fahrenheit. That produces the admired orange-brown color associated with Shigaraki ware, but Kohyama often goes further, firing one or two more times to produce an austere grayish surface.
