Katsumata Chieko

Katsumata Chieko’s work reflects a distinctive ceramic education: all her formal training took place in France, where she traveled in 1973. Her earliest pieces were playfully designed tableware, but over time she began to create more sculptural vessels and experiment with unusual coloring methods and finishes. This coral-like piece was a new form in her repertoire. Undulating surfaces coated with chamotte (fired clay ground into pellets) are topped with an intense iridescent yellow.
