This shell-like lidded stoneware vessel has undulating, ruffled, and pinched ridges protruding from a hand-built body. A textured, creamy white glaze covers its top two-thirds, and its lid repeats its flaring, ridged shape in miniature. One of the first women to graduate from the ceramics department of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, Koike draws inspiration from marine life, seaside cliffs, and natural forms. She is among the most admired studio artists in Japan.
