Embroidered Shawl — Unknown

This embroidered Dogon shawl, from Mali is composed of seven bands. Made of handspun cotton, it is dyed in deep indigo and appears almost black. The red and yellow cotton embroidered geometric patterns are developed on six of the seven bands. Collected in Mali in the 1960s, it is a mid-century example of an important West African textile tradition.
