Funerary chasuble

This chasuble was intended for use in funeral rites, made of black silk damask with black silk voided, cut and uncut velvet orphrey band on reverse, edged with gold metal thread galloon. The front orphrey band is embroidered with a cross above a tomb, the cross decorated with a looped band of metal thread suggesting drapery, all encircled by another band of metal thread with delicate rays emanating from the circle. The silhouette and the arrangement of the orphrey bands suggests that this was made in Rome.
