Ethridge is known for his synthetic approach to photography, bridging the boundaries between the artistic and the commercial, the highbrow and the mundane, and playfully questioning the medium’s traditions and conventions. This photographic diptych takes a mundane subject— that dirt-cheap staple of college kids imported from Asia— and blows it up to monumental proportions. The flattening effect of the lens heightens the subject’s surface allure, and the doubling effect is a sly nod to the homogeneity of mass production and consumption.
