In his prints, paintings, drawings, and sculptures, Siena responds to a set of predetermined instructions that he calls visual algorithms. While the algorithms provide structure, Siena embraces the unpredictability inherent to his freehand approach: he draws repeating lines, irregular grids, and interlocking shapes without the aid of a ruler or other mechanical device. Squa Tront, which Siena engraved intermittently over the course of five years, reveals his adeptness with the labor-intensive technique of engraving.
