The Greek hero Herakles wrestling the sea creature Triton forms a composition that perfectly fits the awkwardly shaped corner of the Hekatompedon pediment. The sculptures first came to light in 1888 and Gilliéron made various preliminary drawings and reconstructions of them. Because the head of Herakles was found in 1938 and published in 1939—the year Gilliéron’s son died—the Museum’s watercolor was never updated. The work is the same size as the original.
