Archaeologists on the Acropolis began finding and reassembling the many fragments of this pediment in 1888, and Gilliéron was drawing them by 1902, probably earlier. Contemporary descriptions emphasize the preserved colors of the sculptures, notably the reds and blues. This rendering is half the size of the original. Gilliéron has lightly suggested parts of the missing animals with graphite and indulged his own coloristic sensitivity in his rendering of the original polychromy.
